Long time no see! You’ll become a food waste researcher and head into San Hui with us: collect food waste from small shops around Tseng Choi Street and learn their recycling habits, visit a nearby refuse point, then sort, weigh and log what we collected and turn it into a street booth for neighbours.

How the day works

  1. 01Collect from shopsWalk with us to small shops around Tseng Choi Street, learn their habits and collect their food waste.

  3. 03Visit a refuse pointVisit a nearby refuse collection point to see how waste flows through the neighbourhood.

Food Waste Researcher is part of the San Hui Community Economy Project 2.0, a people-first economic model that draws on local resources and the skills and knowledge of San Hui’s stakeholders to meet the neighbourhood’s needs.

Volunteers — “Tuen Friends” — receive the community currency “Tuen Dollars” in recognition of their time and effort. Tuen Dollars can be exchanged for partner activities, products and offers from San Hui shops, or surprises, strengthening community ties as they circulate.

Pick a group, go deeper

First time? Just follow the crowd. Once you know the ropes, join one of our groups and help make each researcher day happen.

Data

Tidy up the weigh-in records and spot which shops and which kinds of food waste come up most.

Outreach

Talk to new partner shops and community farms, so food waste has more good places to go.

Street booth

Design and host the booth, and invent new games to chat with neighbours about food waste.

Thank-you cards

Write cards to our partner shops letting them know how many kilos we’ve saved together.
